How to Get Your TIN Number in the Philippines: A Complete Guide

Before you can start working at any formal employer in the Philippines, you'll need a TIN (Tax Identification Number). Issued by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), your TIN is your unique tax identification that stays with you for life โ€” from your first job to your last.

Here's everything you need to know about getting your TIN.

What Is a TIN?

A TIN is a unique number assigned by the BIR to every taxpayer in the Philippines. It's used for:

  • Income tax filings and withholding
  • Employment-related tax compliance
  • Opening bank accounts
  • Applying for loans or government IDs
  • Processing other government transactions

Every employed Filipino must have a TIN. It's one of the first things HR will ask for when you get a job offer.

Important: You Can Only Have One TIN

Under Philippine law, each individual can only have one TIN. Applying for or having more than one TIN is illegal and can result in penalties.

Before applying, check if you already have a TIN from:

  • A previous employer (your employer would have registered you)
  • A freelance or self-employed registration
  • Any previous BIR transaction

If you're unsure whether you have a TIN, contact the BIR directly or check through their online systems.

How to Get Your TIN as a New Employee (First-Time)

Option 1: Through Your Employer (Easiest)

For first-time employees, the most common method is to have your employer register you with the BIR. Your employer is obligated to enroll you in the withholding tax system, and as part of this, they will process your TIN registration if you don't have one.

What you need to provide to HR:

  • Completed BIR Form 1902 (Application for Registration for Individuals Earning Purely Compensation Income)
  • Government-issued ID (UMID, PhilSys ID, driver's license, passport, etc.)
  • Birth certificate (for first-time registrants)
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable and surname has changed)

Your employer submits the form to the BIR Revenue District Office (RDO) covering their business address, and your TIN is processed. This is the simplest path.

Option 2: Apply Directly at the BIR RDO

If your employer doesn't process your TIN registration, or if you need it before employment starts, you can apply directly:

Step 1: Find your appropriate BIR Revenue District Office (RDO)

  • If employed, go to the RDO covering your employer's registered address
  • Use the BIR's RDO locator at bir.gov.ph

Step 2: Fill out BIR Form 1902

  • Available at the RDO or downloadable from bir.gov.ph

Step 3: Submit the form with requirements:

  • Duly accomplished BIR Form 1902
  • One valid government-issued ID
  • Birth certificate (PSA copy preferred)
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Employment certificate or offer letter (recommended)

Step 4: Receive your TIN

  • TIN is typically issued same day or within a few days
  • You'll receive a TIN card (may take additional time to be issued)

Option 3: BIR Online Registration (eReg)

The BIR offers online TIN registration through their eREG system at ereg.bir.gov.ph โ€” specifically for employees registering for the first time under compensation income.

Note: The online system is sometimes offline or restricted; check bir.gov.ph for current availability.

What Happens If You Transferred RDOs?

If you've changed employers and your new employer is registered under a different RDO, you may need to transfer your TIN registration to the new RDO. This requires filing BIR Form 1905 at your current RDO.

Your employer or HR team will typically guide you through this process.

TIN for BPO Employees

If you're joining a BPO like ShoreAgents in Clark Freeport Zone, the company will ask for your TIN as part of pre-employment requirements. If you don't have one yet:

  • Inform HR during the onboarding process
  • ShoreAgents HR will guide you through the employer-facilitated TIN registration
  • Ensure you complete and submit BIR Form 1902 before your first payroll date

Your TIN is used to process your monthly income tax withholding โ€” mandatory for all employed individuals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I get my TIN online? The BIR eREG system is available for online TIN registration for first-time employees. However, availability varies. Check bir.gov.ph for current instructions.

Q: How long does it take to get a TIN? If applying in person at an RDO with complete requirements, a TIN can be issued the same day. Online registration may take a few days.

Q: Is a TIN card the same as a TIN? No. Your TIN is the number itself. A TIN ID (card) is a physical ID issued by the BIR, which may take additional time to be printed and released.

Q: What if I lost my TIN? Contact your BIR RDO directly. Do not apply for a new TIN โ€” simply request a TIN verification and replacement TIN card.

Q: Do freelancers and self-employed people have TINs? Yes. Self-employed individuals register under BIR Form 1901 and are classified differently from purely compensated employees.

Pre-Employment Requirements: What Else You'll Need

When joining a BPO, your TIN is one of several pre-employment requirements. You'll typically also need to prepare:

  • SSS number
  • PhilHealth ID/number
  • Pag-IBIG (HDMF) MID number
  • NBI Clearance
  • Medical examination certificate
  • Government-issued ID
  • Birth certificate

ShoreAgents HR will walk you through all requirements during the onboarding process.
