How to Prepare for Your First BPO Job in the Philippines
Everything you need to prepare for your first BPO job in the Philippines. From pre-employment requirements to day one tips, here's your complete starter guide.
How to Prepare for Your First BPO Job in the Philippines
You've got the job offer โ congratulations! Now what? Starting your first BPO job can feel exciting and a little overwhelming at the same time. Don't worry. With the right preparation, your transition into the BPO world will be smooth and confident. Here's everything you need to do before โ and on โ Day One.
Phase 1: Complete Your Pre-Employment Requirements
Before you can officially start, your new employer will ask for a set of documents. For BPO companies like ShoreAgents, the standard pre-employment requirements include:
Documents to Prepare
- NBI Clearance โ Must be valid (within the year). Apply online at clearance.nbi.gov.ph. Allow at least 1โ2 weeks.
- SSS Number / ID โ Register online at my.sss.gov.ph if you don't have one yet
- PhilHealth Number โ Register at philhealth.gov.ph if unregistered
- Pag-IBIG / HDMF Number โ Register at pagibigfund.gov.ph
- TIN Number โ Provided by a previous employer, or obtained through BIR Form 1902. Your new employer's HR team can help.
- Pre-employment medical exam certificate โ From an accredited clinic; includes CBC, urinalysis, chest X-ray, and drug test
- Birth certificate โ PSA-authenticated copy
- Government-issued ID โ Driver's license, PhilSys, passport, UMID, or voter's ID
- Certificate of Employment (if previously employed) โ From previous employer
- Transcript of Records and Diploma โ Original or certified copies
Tip: Start gathering these immediately after you receive your job offer. Some items (NBI, PSA documents) take time. Don't wait until the week before your start date.
Phase 2: Prepare Yourself Mentally and Practically
Understand Your Role and Your Client
Before Day One, review everything you've been given about the role:
- What will you be doing daily?
- What industry is your Australian or NZ client in?
- What systems and tools will you use?
If ShoreAgents or your team lead shared any preparatory materials, read them thoroughly. Showing up informed makes a strong first impression.
Set Up Your Commute
Figure out your daily commute from home to Philexcel Business Park (or your specific office building in Clark):
- How long will it take? Do a dry run if possible.
- What transport will you use? Tricycle? Personal motorcycle? Grab?
- What time do you need to leave to arrive 15 minutes early?
Always aim to arrive early โ especially in your first week.
Organize Your Morning Routine
The night before your first day:
- Prepare your outfit (professional, office-appropriate โ more on this below)
- Pack your requirements documents and ID
- Set multiple alarms โ late arrivals on Day One are very bad first impressions
- Prepare your lunch or budget for the cafeteria/nearby restaurants
Phase 3: Dress Professionally
BPO offices, especially those serving professional Australian and NZ clients, maintain business casual or business professional dress codes. This means:
For women:
- Blouses, button-up shirts, blazers, smart trousers or skirts
- Closed-toe shoes or flats (avoid flip-flops, very casual sandals)
- Minimal but professional accessories and makeup
For men:
- Collared shirts (polo shirts or button-ups), slacks
- Clean, professional shoes (not rubber shoes/sneakers for formal occasions)
- Well-groomed appearance โ neat hair, clean shave or trimmed beard
When in doubt, dress slightly more formally than you think is necessary โ especially in your first weeks. You can always adjust once you understand the company culture.
Phase 4: Set the Right Mindset
Your first few weeks are about learning, not performing at peak. Give yourself permission to:
- Ask questions โ this is expected and encouraged
- Make small mistakes โ they're part of learning
- Listen more than you speak โ absorb the culture, processes, and expectations
The employees who stand out in their first BPO job are those who are:
- Punctual and reliable โ Consistent attendance is the baseline of trust
- Eager to learn โ Ask questions, take notes, re-read training materials
- Positive and professional โ Good energy is noticed by managers and colleagues
- Communicative โ If you're confused or stuck, say so. Don't suffer in silence.
Phase 5: Day One Essentials
Arrive Early
Aim to be at the office at least 15 minutes before your shift starts. This gives you time to find your workstation, log in, and settle before the day begins.
Bring What You Need
- Pen and notebook for taking notes during orientation
- Complete pre-employment documents in a folder (organized and labelled)
- Your IDs
- Water bottle and snacks or lunch
During Orientation
- Pay close attention during HR orientation โ this is where you'll learn policies, benefits, leave rules, and workplace expectations
- Fill out all forms completely and accurately
- Don't be afraid to ask HR for clarification on anything you don't understand
Meet Your Team
Your first day will likely include introductions. Be warm, genuine, and professional. Learn names โ people notice when you remember them.
Phase 6: Build Good Habits from Day One
The habits you form in your first month often define your reputation:
- Log in on time โ every single day
- Complete tasks by deadlines โ communicate if you're at risk of missing one
- Keep notes โ write down instructions so you don't have to ask twice
- Communicate proactively โ update your team lead if you're uncertain about anything
- Take care of yourself โ rest, eat well, and manage your health so you show up consistently at your best
